So You Think I Just Sell Milkshakes and Cereal, huh?!?

fb_share_quote_bigThink again…..Here’s the BIG Picture:

FACT:

For the first time in the history of the world there are more overweight people than there are malnourished people.

Upon hearing this news I was shocked.  I grew up in the day of television specials that revealed a pandemic of malnutrition & poverty.  When did the tables turn? How did we get here?

Our enemy at Visalus is NOT other companies, diets or lifestyles.  For the record, I support anyone who is taking a proactive step towards better health and there are many good options out there.

Our enemy at Visalus is the number 1 health crisis in the world: OBESITY!!!

FACT:

We are now the 2nd largest weight-loss product sales company in North America, right behind Weight Watchers after only THREE years!!!!  We now have the largest army ever assembled who are singularly focused on the war against obesity.

The Challenge is not just another fad diet whose time will pass.

The Challenge is a Lifestyle!

So before you get to criticizing the method, model & means by which we are making such a profound impact on the health consciousness of North America I just wanted to direct your eyes to the BIGGER picture here.

You see, we don’t simply seek to be the best company in our industry or in the world for that matter.  Our mission and vision as a company is to become the largest provider of healthy, fast food in the world!!!

To our critics may I simply suggest that YOU go out & create something beautiful with the same passion & vigor with which you try to destroy the beautiful things others are building.

My Top 3 Fears and How I Punch Them in the Face

MyTop3FearsWhen I was a kid I always feared rejection.

Whenever I was accepted, I feared losing it.

Fear is a Liar.

When I was a young man, I always feared being unloved.

When I finally had someone’s hand to hold I feared they’d pull it away.

Fear is a Thief.

As a married man with 6 children, I fear I am not being enough for them.

When my bride assures me that I am enough I dismiss her words and dwell instead on what I know I could be if I just tried harder.

Fear says you’re not enough.

I’d love to be able to wrap this post up with a nice, little bow of reconciliation about how I conquered fear once and for all, but that wouldn’t be honest. I think it’s always gonna’ be there in some way.  38 years and counting so far…

I think of this question often: Without fear, what kind of plot would there be in my story anyway? It certainly wouldn’t be a book worth reading!

I’ve found a bit of relief in these words:

“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”

Nelson Mandela

I’m pretty certain that the best I can do today is to decide to be brave once more.

To show courage when fear whispers and take just one more shaky step forward.

And in so doing,  punch Fear full in the face!

Where is fear telling you not to go?

What’s 1 step you can take toward that place today?

Do it!

How a Chiclet toppled the Empire State Building – The Power of Starting Small

Start Small if You Must...But Start NOW!I think many people get discouraged by the SIZE of the impact they are making on the world. I know I certainly get tired from time to time.  I wanted to take a quick minute to encourage you to not lose sight of the SCOPE of the impact you are making!

I came across a video today that gave me a real awakening as to the power of taking small, seemingly insignificant local action on HUGE problems.

It helped me to remember our story. 3 years ago my wife & I decided to take control of our personal health by starting a simple 90 Day Challenge.  That simple decision started a chain reaction that has effected 1000’s of lives!

Watch this brief video & be encouraged!

You just never know whose life you will impact!

KAIROS – The Art of Being There

Kairos: (καιρός)

An ancient Greek word meaning the right or opportune moment

(The supreme moment).

There is a moment I long for when the clock releases it’s shackles on my day and all that is urgent drifts away.  This is Kairos.

A holy moment when eye contact, hushed conversation, laughter or sacred silence is more than enough.  This is Kairos.

Chronos: (Χρόνος)

An ancient Greek word meaning time as it is measured.

(Time on the Move)

In a world of rushed-rhythms and hurried-hustle I long for the moments when Mighty Chronos yawns, stretches his arms, and bows to the full weight of time. This is Kairos.

Take Make the time to deliberately summon Kairos whether through questions, or eye contact or intentional pause. Time is fleeting unless you claim it. This is Kairos.

Chronos has only the power we allow it to possess.

Seek Kairos.

Claim Your Life!

Why Keep a Journal by Jim Rohn

ImageToday I was challenged to begin keeping a journal.  I recalled this powerful teaching by one of my all-time favorite mentors, Mr. Jim Rohn.  If you’re serious about becoming successful ,whatever that may mean for you, then journaling is a must!  Soak in this powerful teaching from Mr. Rohn himself.

Why Keep A Journal?
by Jim Rohn

If you’re serious about becoming a wealthy , powerful, sophisticated, healthy, influential, cultured and unique individual—don’t trust your memory—keep a journal. When you listen to something valuable, write it down. When you come across something important, write it down.

I used to take notes on pieces of paper and torn-off corners and backs of old envelopes. I wrote ideas on restaurant placemats. On long sheets, narrow sheets and little sheets and pieces of paper thrown in a drawer. Then I found out that the best way to organize those ideas is to keep a journal. I’ve been keeping these journals since the age of twenty-five. The discipline makes up a valuable part of my learning, and the journals are a valuable part of my library.

I am a buyer of blank books. Kids find it interesting that I would buy a blank book. They say, “Twenty-six dollars for a blank book! Why would you pay that?” The reason I pay twenty-six dollars is to challenge myself to find something worth twenty-six dollars to put in there. All my journals are private, but if you ever got a hold of one of them, you wouldn’t have to look very far to discover it is worth more than twenty-six dollars.

I must admit if you got a glimpse of my journals, you’d have to say that I am a serious student. I’m not just committed to my craft; I’m committed to life , committed to learning new concepts and skills. I want to see what I can do with seed, soil, sunshine and rain to turn them into the building blocks of a productive life.

Keeping a journal is so important. I call it one of the three treasures to leave behind for the next generation. In fact, future generations will find these three treasures far more valuable than your furniture.

The first treasure is your pictures… Take a lot of pictures. Don’t be lazy in capturing the event. How long does it take to capture the event? A fraction of a second. How long does it take to miss the event? A fraction of a second. So don’t miss the pictures. When you’re gone, they’ll keep the memories alive.

The second treasure is your library… This is the library that taught you, that instructed you, that helped you defend your ideals. It helped you develop a philosophy.. It helped you become wealthy , powerful, healthy, sophisticated, and unique. It may have helped you conquer some disease. It may have helped you conquer poverty. It may have caused you to walk away from the ghetto. Your library, the books that instructed you, fed your mind and fed your soul, is one of the greatest gifts you can leave behind.

The third treasure is your journals… All the ideas you picked up, the information that you meticulously gathered. And of the three, journal writing is one of the greatest indications that you’re a serious student. Taking pictures, that is pretty easy. Buying a book at a bookstore, that’s pretty easy. However, it is a little more challenging to be a student of your own life , your own future, your own destiny. Take the time to keep notes and to keep a journal. You’ll be so glad you did. What a treasure to leave behind when you go. What a treasure to enjoy today!

To Your Success,

Jim Rohn

Not All Home Based Businesses Are Created Equal – Tips to Help You Decide

images-1I am passionate about the Network Marketing industry.  Whether you call it Network Marketing, MLM, a home based business or even an un-franchise it’s all the same to me.  Many have misconceptions about this industry due to some unethical fools who manipulate others for their own personal gain. There are schmucks in every profession.

I am a network marketing professional and I hold my head high.  I’ve been involved in the industry now for nearly 10 years and my experiences have run the gamut from pathetic failure to top income earner.  Having been around the block a bit I wanted to offer a few tips as to what to look for when starting your own network marketing business.  There are many options out there so perhaps this will be of help to you.

Top Tips for Selecting a Home Based Business

Choose a Solid Company– I used to believe that the only way for the average person to achieve success in MLM was to get in on the “Ground Floor”; it’s actually exactly the opposite. This lottery strategy is exciting and many fall into it’s trap.  I did.  I was involved in 3 start ups before choosing to partner with a solid company.  All 3 of those companies folded before I even had a chance to call my entire list!  The promises of ‘get in early’ are attractive to some who have seen others have success but in my experience I have NEVER YET seen a person who chose to build with a new company who was still with the company after 2 years (most are burned out before their 1st year and walk away murmuring about how the industry is horrible.) If the words “ground floor” or “get in early” are in the pitch kindly smile, nod & back out of the room.

Find a Successful Leader to work with– I love to go to dinner & movies with my friends. My family loves to frequent the movie theaters of our area to check out the newest blockbuster.  But here’s a fact you may not know- The friend who shared the business with you is probably not an expert in the industry.  I’m certainly not saying to only work with the top leaders but I am saying that you had better have some conversations & do some research on the reputation & qualifications of the leaders on your team.  Speak with them on the phone and ask them your questions.  I have seen many a friendship get weird when one is put in a role as business mentor when just last week you were babysitting their children.  Some friendships can make this transition. Personally, I find it rewarding to build a business with friends but if you are looking to have the type of success you were promised on that video you’d better have direct access to someone who has attained what you’re after.  I like to introduce all people to my wife…She has the ability to see things in people that I miss.  She calls it intuition but I call it magic!

Does the Company Have a Simple System & Quality Tools-  I joined a company once because they had the most amazing & exciting 3 minute video I’d ever seen.  Many of my friends joined our team based on the same exciting video.  The problem, of course, was that nobody really ever tried the product! If someone is coming at you with big promises and unwavering belief about a product they just heard about a few weeks ago I advise you to take a deep breath and sit on the sidelines for a bit.  Your friends and warm market are going to take action based on your relationship with them.  When they hear your passion & conviction they will be compelled to join you.  There are many great products represented in this industry and some mediocre ones as well. Don’t risk your social equity on the promises of a snazzy powerpoint slide, a well-made video or some lady you’ve never met in front of a room with a story.  If the company is solid now it will be solid when you’re done doing your due diligence.

Unless you plan on learning everything about the product, compensation plan and business model then I suggest you closely inspect what kind of tools the company has to offer.  There is a wise saying that I share with my team all the time, “USE the tools, don’t BE the tool!”  Many start ups rely on the magnetism of a few well-spoken leaders to leverage a large group to join the company.   If you can’t do what they can do when it comes to sharing the company with others then your business is doomed for failure.  Solid tools (websites, videos, brochures, sizzle calls, sampling) are the pathway to success for the unexperienced networker.  No tools, No Team!

Customers Are Good For Business-  Here’s a red flag.  Someone goes on & on about how revolutionary their product or service is!  You are sold and ready to buy when all of a sudden you find out that if you become a ‘Distributor’ you can get it at a discount.  Because this practice is so widespread in the industry I never even saw any problem with it until I experienced how healthy it feels to simply let a customer be a customer. Don’t misunderstand me, some company reps offer discounts for becoming a rep but they offer it as an option and don’t make you feel stupid for simply becoming a customer.

Most of your friends probably want to try the product or service you have to offer but when they suddenly are confronted with starting a business to get a good deal it can get awkward.  A healthy business model focuses primarily on getting customers and then promoters.  It’s totally acceptable for a company to make a customer aware of being a distributor but If the overall message of the company & the folks in the room focuses on a culture of “JUST GET YOUR 3 AND WE’LL ALL BE RICH” then proceed with caution! In fact, I have found that my best promoters were happy customers first!

These are just some initial things to look for when starting a new business.  It’s an exciting time for sure.  This industry has dramatically transformed the entire course of my family!  My intent with this post is to simply bring to light some very important factors to look for in deciding on a entrepreneurial vehicle for you &/or your family.  Success is possible in this industry and I am living proof.

If You Can’t Post Anything Nice.. – How to Avoid & Resolve Conflict on Social Media

ImageAdmittedly, I know more about Facebook than I should.  I could wrap it around something noble but honestly, I’m just sort of addicted to the whole thing.  I love to interact with people and play connect-the-dots with relationships in an effort to make this world a bit more Awesome!

I’ve noticed several trends regarding Facebook statuses lately and they’re not helping you. I’m writing this post in an attempt to help some folks out. While there are many breeds of toxic updates I’ve chosen to address 2 of the most prevalent.

Let me first start out by saying that your Facebook persona is more powerful than you probably realize.  It casts either a light or a shadow upon your audience about who you are and what you stand for. If you’ve made it this far in the post then you are probably open to even caring about this so let’s proceed.

Unhealthy Facebook Statuses:

-Posting a status that is derogatory about someone directly.  You tag them, you’re angry, you feel better (for now).

-Posting a status that is angry in tone & vague as to who it’s intended for.  This person is actually hoping that a specific person sees it or that someone makes sure he/she does.

Why These Posts are Toxic:

I’ve had several conversations with people about this topic.  I’ve heard many give me the justification that it’s important to ‘be real’ on Facebook.  It’s interesting to me that the defense of ‘being real’ is only given to justify negativity.

Here’s why these posts are toxic.

The problem with social media is that it gives every voice & opinion equal weight into YOUR life. By airing out your problems to the world you are opening yourself up to a barrage of negativity wrapped in a cloak of concern.

While Facebook may not be ‘real life’ I can assure you it will find it’s way into yours…sooner or later.  I say later because by choosing to air out your rant you cannot control who among your friends thinks it was intended for them.  Perceived confrontation is more damaging than literal confrontation because one has time to fester while the other is over & done with. Like I said, not scientific but true nonetheless.

The Antidote:

Instead of deciding to air out your anger & frustration to the world I encourage you to pick up that smartphone of yours and ‘phone a friend.’  I’m totally aware that this is old school but I’m am determined to bring it back and can accomplish it with your help! You may choose to contact the person you are upset at or call someone who you respect and admire to give you advice on how to best proceed with this conflict.  Opening yourself up to the advice of those who don’t have your best interests at heart is toxic.  Keep your drama off Facebook!

Letters on a screen lack emotion. You know it’s true.  How many times have you misinterpreted what someone meant?  How did that make you feel once you found out the truth of the matter that you misread their emotion?

Relationships are too valuable.

Don’t put yours at risk because you forgot an emoticon! :/

Social media is a beautiful and powerful thing but it cannot replace the authentic interaction of two souls.  There is a valuable substance contained in the human voice that Facebook & Twitter simply can’t compete with.  Here’s my Challenge to you:

Take the Facebook Challenge:

Identify 1 friend or follower on social media who you feel at a distance from because of something that happened on Facebook, Twitter etc.  It’s really hard for me to explain what I mean by this but, chances are, you know what I’m talking about.  This next part is the real challenge.

Call them just to say, Hi.  Simply to catch up.  They may not even know that you perceive a conflict so don’t mention it.  Whether this call ends awkwardly or with exuberant tears of reconciliation from years of neglect doesn’t matter.  You are not picking up the phone because you have an agenda but, rather, because you have a friend!

I give you permission to be scared about taking this first step but I encourage you to take it anyway. If you do not value the relationship enough to make a phone call or the other person refuses to speak with you then I encourage you to ‘unfriend’ or block them asap.  Drama has a way of distracting you on your pursuit of awesome and ain’t nobody got time fo’ dat!

Please let me know what I missed & how your challenge went in the comments below.

The Myth of Motivation – Swallow That Frog

Image

Activity Trumps Motivation Every Time

I used to have this belief that I needed a healthy dose of motivation before I could take action.  This fallacy found it’s roots in my noble pursuit of personal development.

You may have started reading this blog in your own quest to be motivated.  If that’s you, I’m going to challenge you with a task.  I’ll actually be taking on the same challenge for a 24 day challenge I’ve volunteered for inspired by Jon Acuff’s amazing book, START!

In my life I have discovered that motivation is actually overrated.  The truth of the matter is that I am most productive after I begin taking action on a task.  Here’s my theory:

Action CREATES Motivation

Right now, I want you to identify the task you’ve been putting off as of late.  Chances are this activity is not urgent but it is important.  I want you to commit to completing that task TODAY before you even do any of the other, more urgent, things on your to-do list.  This technique of tackling the BIG stuff is called, “Swallowing the Frog.”

Here’s my theory:  The satisfaction you will feel in having finally completed the 1 thing you’ve been putting off for so long will actually inspire you to bust right through the rest of your list.

Motivation is a trap.  It is quite a shiny and lovely thing and certainly has it’s place in the arena of success but, it is not the main ingredient for winning.  Activity trumps motivation each and every time.  So here is my theory:

Action creates Motivation

Motivation without Action = Frustration

If you’ve been finding yourself increasingly frustrated and less productive then chances are you’ve fallen into the Motivation Trap.

If you have been inspired by the words I have shared with you that is called motivation.

If you allow yourself to take immediate action that is a victory.

It’s your move…go out there and swallow that frog.

Be sure to share your “Frogs” below and let me know how this concept helped you!

How 90 Days Changed My Family Forever- Our Story

If you’ve ever set a New Year’s Resolution you know the feeling of forgetting what you even committed to by February 1st. Almost 3 years ago now I started setting goals a different way and it has transformed my life and the way I live it.

Image

I know. I’m sorry but this is horrible.

If you’re like me you probably tend to set goals when you are frustrated. Maybe the buttons of your pants is screaming for relief or that yellow dress is beginning to make your back look a lot like a croissant! At any rate, you realize one day that something about your life is out of control and your are ready to do something about it! The problem with this approach however, is that frustration lends itself to desperation and desperate people resort to desperate measures. Here’s my story:

Image

Don’t you love when friends tag you in a Facebook photo?

I was the heaviest I’d ever been and one of my friends posted a picture of me on Facebook and was kind enough to tag me in it. I didn’t know how to remove that tag and I was embarrassed. Now normally, I would make a vow to start eating ‘right’, begin exercising & vow not to eat anything sweet until…well, ever again!!! I would make these decisions as a punishment for letting myself get so out of control. In September, 2010 however, I learned about a 90 Day Challenge.

My wife & I were frustrated. We had tried over and over again to change all of the factors at 1 time that are necessary to achieve weightloss and had failed miserable. For our first 90 Day Challenge all we did was replace 2 meals a day with a delicious shake, eat a normal, non-diety 3rd meal and snack when we felt like it. She lost 23 lbs & I lost 27. Success happened when we focuses on just 1 thing…It’s a concept called ‘Narrowing Your Focus’.

Image

Because of her success on her 1st Challenge my wife had the confidence to run her first 5K ever!

My crossfit friends frowned at my method and my ultra-healthy friends tried to explain their better way (again) but we were having success and decided to do our own thing for 90 days. Here’s the crazy thing. For my wife’s second 90 Day Challenge she committed to training for her 1st 5K. She partnered up with a few other women and our daughter and actually finished the Iron Girl 5k!

After losing a total of 42 lbs in my 1st 2 Challenges I actually returned to the gym! I put on my 14 lbs of muscle in 90 Days using a Challenge Kit designed for folks who wanted to achieve those results. 3 months ago I actually did a juice fast with my friend who has a phenomenal Facebook community called ‘Juicing with Jill’.

Sometime, experts mean well but they underestimate the power of gradual changes over time. They are so passionate a out what they do now that they fail to remember that they didn’t get there overnight.

Here’s a fact: The Body by Vi Challenge is the path of least resistance to becoming a healthier person because the products taste amazing, they are simple & very affordable (ie. FREE) Over 100,000 a month start a 90 Day Challenge of their own!

In the almost 3 years I’ve been sharing the Body by Vi 90 Day Challenge with folks we have helped 1000’s of people not only reach their health goals but maintain them. On the surface, many folks dismiss The Challenge as some fad but here are some numbers for you:

Image

For more Facts, just click the picture

Simply put, the Body by Vi Challenge is not a diet but a lifestyle IF you allow yourself to implement it for 90 Days. Many folks make a couple shakes and then just move on to the next lotion, potion, pill or powder that comes along. They continue to approach as a punishment instead of a Challenge and let me tell you, punishing yourself is toxic.

Image

And we’ve KEPT the weight off for over 2 years now!

Image

My wife actually posted a picture of me shirtless on Facebook. The Challenge has helped in several aspects of our marriage 🙂

I encourage you to take a close look at what exactly the 90 Day Body by Vi Challenge powered by Visalus Sciences has to offer. Everyone will NEVER agree with the same thing but here’s what I know: Our family has been transformed by the power of 90 Day Challenges and you can NEVER take my story from me.

Are you up for a Challenge?

From a Blogger to Both of My Readers

Image

My daughter and I in Times Square enjoying a random guy just destroying our moment.

Somebody called me a blogger today. I  don’t know quite what this label comes with but I’m not certain it matters much. I’m new to this blogging thing although I’m no stranger to writing.  For the most part I’ve spent the last 3 years honing my craft on Facebook and have been pretty much crushing it.  1-3 sentence blogs are easier than having a website that folks show up to.  My Facebook friends are pretty much stuck with me but if you hate my blog once chances are you won’t be back.

I didn’t start my blog to make money.  I’m not even sure I knew that was possible when I started.  I’m not above monetizing my blog (I just learned that term.)  I’m afraid this might accidentally start feeling like work so I’ll avoid that temptation for a while until I know more.

In the meantime, I’m really just trying to figure out what to write about next.  I have this dream of being published one day but I don’t know how all that happens.  I learned a few things yesterday, though.

I crave for others to like my words.  For their tone to inspire you to respond in some way that does not involve being repulsed.

I still can’t understand what makes people get to the bottom of my blog.  It thrills me that you’re reading my thoughts, passions and ideas.  I seek to serve you, the reader, while releasing what’s been going on in my head all this time. True Confession:  I’ve been wanting to write a book.

Yesterday I spoke with my friend, Grant, and I asked him a question that had been rolling in my mind for a while, “Who am I to write a book?” His response to me was life-changing and I’ll unpack it in another post because it has me feeling a bit raw still.

I’m now rolling over another question in my head: “Rob, who are you NOT to write a book?”

It’s amazing what speaking to the right person will do to a dream.  Throw your dream out there friends…it matters!
